During a killing operation, the
mud gas separator separates gas from returning mud. The
separator can be overloaded and the seal mud can become gas-cut,
creating a potentially dangerous situation. The operator
needs warning that the liquid seal is about to fail.
EFC’s LSM works with
differential pressure,
continuously comparing internal pressure of the separator with
hydrostatic pressure at the base of the trip tank/U-tube.
Under normal conditions the
liquid seal bargraph is fully lit, but as differential pressure
drops, first the green then the amber lights go out. An alarm
horn then sounds warning the driller of an imminent blow
through.
